How the M'Cheyne reading plan works
Four beginnings on the first day
The plan does not go through the Bible cover to cover: it opens four tracks at once. On 1 January you read Genesis 1, Matthew 1, Ezra 1 and Acts 1. Reading straight through, alone, almost everyone stalls in the laws of Leviticus; here, on the Leviticus days, the same portion brings a Psalm, a chapter of Proverbs or Ecclesiastes and a letter of Paul.
About 20 minutes of reading. It fits before breakfast or after dinner.
The Old Testament once; the New Testament and the Psalms twice.
Two readings for family worship, two for private devotion.
The story of the plan is in M'Cheyne's 1842 letter to his church, in full. All 365 days are in the calendar.

Questions about the plan
- How long does it take each day?
- About 20 minutes for the four chapters. You can split it: two readings in the morning with the family, two at night on your own — whatever fits your home.
- Do I have to start on 1 January 2027?
- No. The plan follows the calendar date, so any day is a good day to begin: open today's portion and go on from there. In twelve months you go through the whole Bible just the same.
- What if I miss a day?
- Don't try to catch up all at once: pick up at today's date. M'Cheyne himself warned his church: “My desire is not to cast a snare upon you, but to be a helper of your joy.”
- Is it McCheyne or M'Cheyne?
- Both — it is the same man and the same plan. In 19th-century Scottish printing, “Mc” was often set as “M'”, so his name appears as Robert Murray M'Cheyne in the older books and as McCheyne today.
- Does it work with any Bible translation?
- Yes. The plan gives books and chapters, so it works with the Bible you already have. On this site, each day is shown in the King James Version (public domain).
- Is this the plan D. A. Carson follows?
- Yes. Carson's two-volume devotional For the Love of God follows M'Cheyne's order of reading, and churches around the world still use it. The full year is in the calendar.
- Is the PDF free? Do I need to sign up?
- Free, and no sign-up. Print as many copies as you like and share them with your family or church.
- What about 29 February?
- 2027 has no 29 February. In leap years, repeat the reading of the 28th.
